Sir Rhys ap Esgair Ddu
Sir Rhys, Lord of Esgair Ddu, chafes under the thumb of the Norman oppressors. They stole away first his eldest son, with their talk of rightful inheritance, and then his daughter through marriage, and he could do nothing but watch. And then there is the trouble of what to do with a plot of land too small to parcel out amongst ten children. As best as he could, Sir Rhys provided for his daughters, seeing that they married good men of means, who could care for them throughout their lives, but his sons… His sons were troublesome, and their mother disliked his sending them all away to earn honor and glory; not just for the family, but for Wales.
