Murphy O'Shenanigan

Bound on a mission to bring the true gospel to Britain, Murphy doesn't mind stopping for a pint or two, nor going far out of his way for some good cheese. Another ulterior motive for his coming to Britain is to search for the recipe for heather ale.

  • Story of The Siege of Angharad's Grove in which Huw of the Beard was captured (successes:0, failures: 0)
    • Darkness had fallen, and the campfires were lit
    • Reconnaisance team had details about groups besieging Angharad's grove from the compass points, shielding their campfires to be less visible from within the grove
    • Decision was made for Anfri to lead with a diversion to draw the bad guys out and disrupt their order
    • Kai had prayed for the fires to go out and was acting a little weird
    • Arrived at grove and climbed a tree on the outskirts with Owain to get a good view of the area
    • Chava did some sort of ritual on the ground around the base of the tree from which Owain and I were watching
    • Prayed for protection and strength in battle for Anfri (not helpful?)
    • Prayed for protection and strength in battle for Kai (felt that it was very helpful!)
    • Mentally prepared for healing that I felt was sure to be needed with such overwhelming odds
    • Anfri raced in to distract and attack the group where Huw of the Beard was leading the siege
    • Angharad circled around to the far side of the grove and began slinging stones and knocking thugs senseless
    • Kai launched in to attack one of the groups, and at one point impaled two thugs at once
    • Brænwyn launched in to attack another group, and at one point had the besiegers on the run, and one of them was eaten by one of the large ancient grove trees!
    • Angharad circled back to the right, and at one point one of the besiegers was swallowed up by the earth!
    • When the besiegers tried to use torches to attack the trees, the fires suddenly snuffed themselves out, throwing them into further confusion
    • Against overwhelming odds (more than 5 to 1), the battle was a route in favor of Anfri, Angharad, Kai and Brænwyn
    • Huw of the Beard was captured and bound to one of the trees, and will be brought to justice before Baron Terrence Falconcrest
  • Puppet accompaniment to Owain's musical version of The Siege of Angharad's Grove (successes: 0, failures: 1)
  • Biography of The Tree of Angharad's Grove (Owain has started working on some accompanying music; successes:0, failures: 1)
    • Wind rustling in the leaves
    • Branches creaking gently, but intelligibly
    • Growth as a small sapling
    • Pressing out leaves and flowers in springtime
    • Birds coming, nesting and leaving
    • Feeling the breeze and rain in springtime and summer
    • Growing acorns in short summertimes
    • Storing up and preparing for long winters
    • Changing colors of leaves, finally shaking the leaves and acorns free for the winter
    • Long cold winters with wind and blankets of snow
    • Peace and harmony here in the grove
  • Travel tale about Crossing the Irish Sea (Owain has some excellent accompanying music; successes: 1, failures: 0)
  • Parable of The Ranger & the Rope Ladder (inspired by Brænwyn's clumsiness at the Creepy Tower, successes: 1, failures: 0)
    • Background / Intro
      • There once was a ranger, a strong fighter with a good heart.
      • But she was a bit too eager for her own good, and that sometimes lead to carelessness.
    • Story Proper
      • One day, this ranger was leading a group on a dangerous ascent up a rope ladder.
      • Too eager, as was her wont, she tried to exit too quickly at the top, and narrowly escaped disaster for both herself and others in her party.
      • All turned out well in the end, but as she has trouble with memory, she did not remember her nearly disasterous carelessness.
    • Lesson
      • Pay heed to your mistakes and learn from them.
  • Parable of The Bard & the Innkeeper's Daughters (inspired by Owain's apparent popularity and chivalry with respect to Myrtle and Brinna at the Red Boar, successes: 0, failures: 1)
    • Background / Intro
      • There once was a friendly young wanderer who liked to sing, play music & tell stories, often together.
      • He was good at it, too, at least good enough to make a meager living while busking.
      • This fellow was quite handsome, but if he knew it, he kept that knowledge to himself and never exploited it.
      • Nevertheless, he often drew the eyes (and won the hearts) of ladies who chanced upon his performances.
    • Story Proper
      • One evening, he was entertaining in a tavern owned by an innkeeper who had two beautiful unmarried daughters, both close to the same age as our bard.
      • They saw his performance, and it felt to them as if his lute was strung with their very heart strings. They were smitten.
      • After the songs and stories had ended for the night, the innkeeper's daughters flirted with him as they cleaned up.
      • He was kind, and welcomed their conversation and company, even while knowing their flirtatious intentions all along.
      • Being an honorable young man, and knowing he would soon need to leave town with his friends, the bard never once pressed his advantage with the innkeeper's daughters.
      • But being friendly by nature, neither did he even once reject the young ladies' company. He took both in what he believed to be graceful stride.
      • The young ladies were sorely heartbroken when he had to go, because they had fallen not only for his looks and talent, but also for his friendly and honorable personality. By comparison, their other local suitors paled.
    • Lesson
      • Honor always comes at a price, sometimes one that is difficult to measure.
  • Parable about Miraculous Rain Protection Bubble (successes: 1, failures: 0)
    • Background / Intro
      • Called on a mission to bring the Good News to Wales from Ireland
      • Not knowing the language is not the only danger in this new land
      • Happy for God's provision in meeting adventurers who want to protect me in my mission
    • Story Proper
      • Awakening for third watch to find that our whole group is protected from the rain by a bubble
      • Nervous at first, but interprets this as a sign from God that He is with us, protecting this mission
      • Prayer for bread to turn into cheese was granted, strengthening this assurance
    • Lesson
      • If you feel called to do something, you may have fear, but you will also receive assurance
  • Parable about The Dishonest Priest (patterned only vaguely after the Sons of Eli, but in the present, inspired by the reluctance of the priest at Pentrebyrn, successes: 1, failures: 0)
    • Background / Intro
      • After figuring out the local prejudices, and making sure there's no one in the room that matches that prejudice, there once was a _(insert racial epithet)__ priest, who, while believing he was doing the right thing, was selfish and corrupt in his heart
    • Story Proper
      • Give several examples of sins the priest committed, such as extorting the congregation, not showing mercy to others, living too richly, misuse of donations, tax evasion, cursing local farmers & merchants, etc.
      • But still, no one ever lifted a hand to harm the priest, and he lived to a ripe old age, and then he died. After all, he had been called by God to his office. And because of the mercy the people showed where the priest had none, and in spite of the priest's corruption, the people were blessed, and they survived many hardships
    • Lesson
      • Even when people in high positions seem not to care, or even to actively want to harm you, if you return curses with mercy, you will be spared
  • Parable about The Smiting of Evil (patterned only vaguely after the account from 2 Samuel 6 in which Uzzah was struck down when he reached out his hand to steady the Ark of the Covenant, but in the present, inspired by a large, evil, winged creature (demon?) killed by lightning inside the Creepy Tower, successes: 0, failures: 0)
    • Background / Intro
      • A group of crusaders offered to help a friend
      • Little did they know the trouble they would be getting themselves into!
    • Story Proper
      • The needed help turned out to be the purification, pacification and/or destruction of an evil stronghold that had recently been awakened
      • As there were no easy / apparent entrances, this stronghold was not guarded from the outside, but crazy evil bat-like monsters swarmed around the high windows used to gain access
      • Having bested the crazy evil bat-like monsters, the crusaders pressed forward, downward into the darkness, deep below the earth's surface
      • Suddenly, the friend who the crusaders were trying to help was knocked out, captured, bound and outfitted for what appeared to be a blood sacrifice
      • Beside the unholy alter at the base of the evil stronghold were two large evil winged demon creatures, keeping sentry with the evil priestess
      • One of the crusaders, a holy man, prayed for protection and deliverance, and lightning rained down from on high, vaporizing one of the evil demons (in reality, I think Chava was the one mostly behind the lightning strike, but Murphy has his own interpretation of the events due to the timing)
      • Dismayed and disheartened by the divine power shown by the One True God, the evil priestess and her minions were doomed to defeat
      • One of other crusaders, not particularly a fighter, but a fine scrapper nonetheless, threw blessed holy water onto the unholy alter, evil priestess and surrounding evil minions, striking further fear into them and forcing them to flee
      • In the aftermath, the holy man prayed for healing for the now liberated friend, who had been injured in her captivity
      • The friend, along with the others, ritually cleansed and sanctified the area with holy water and hyssop, but the place was too evil, and could not stand the overwhelming purification demanded by the One True God, and collapsed in on itself
      • The crusaders were able to escape safely, but the evil was dispelled from that place forever
    • Lessons
      • Before helping out a friend in need, consider the cost
      • Do not go up against with the One True God!

Bio:

Murphy O’Shenanigan is an Irish monk who was dedicated to God's service at a young age and grew up in a monastic order established by Saint Patrick many years earlier. As he grew, he showed a talent for the classical languages and communicating with others, especially through parables. Hearing that there were many souls to save there (and also having heard stories of great cheese and a legend about a wonderful drink known as "heather ale"), Murphy sought and received a commission from the abbott to take the gospel to the heathen across the Irish Sea. Though fervent in his mission, Murphy was inadequately prepared. Specifically, the language spoken by the people in Wales is quite different than his own Irish Gælic, but ironically, it was the distant similarities between the two tongues that got in his way more than the differences. As a result of this setback, Murphy sought out and travelled among local monastaries where he could at least communicate in Latin with his peers of other orders while he slowly learns Welsh.

Murphy is a jovial, non-violent monk of about 20 with red hair and green eyes. He's not too tall and in pretty good shape as far as monks go, but despite recent travel and activity, a bit soft around the middle. This softness is likely due, at least in part, to his great love of cheese. His heart is also very soft, and Murphy has a genuine concern for the well being of his traveling companions. Almost to a fault, he would do nearly anything to help them.
